Rob has been dedicating his time to stripping the basement. A while ago he tore down a lot of the wood paneling but this weekend was all about the “cold storage room” in the basement (very dark and creepy but full of old xmas decorations). We also salvaged the old cupboard near the laundry sink which might get a face lift in the spring.
The concept is a clean slate in the basement. While we are not planning on digging it out or constructing anything down there, we want it to be cleaner and without the old wood holding in moisture. We are also interested in centralizing the utilities. Our goal here is not to refinish the basement now but to set it up to be able to in the future (hence enlarge one of the windows being replaced so that it can act as the required egress for a future living space).
I wanted to take this opportunity to post information on Ottawa Freecycle again. This is a website where people post things they want to give away for free. There is an amazing amount of stuff posted on this site. I posted the wood paneling just in case someone wanted it in order to try to avoid sending it to a landfill but I don’t know how likely it is that someone will take it (maybe it would be good for a tree house). The website is: http://ca.groups.yahoo.com/group/OttawaON-Freecycle/ if you are interested.
