Sourcing Rain Barrels?

The eavestroughs are going in soon so we thought that we might source rain barrels now so that we can work them into the installation. We need at least two to go on the corners of the north facing side of our house. If anyone has advice for us on size? configuration? platforms? good stores?..... please let us know.

We use a plastic garbage can. It's on top of a few cinder blocks, and has a hole cut near the bottom, with a tap installed. The soaker hose screws onto the tap, and I turn it on for an hour or so when the garden looks dry. We took one of those flexible downspouts and cut a hole in the garbage can's lid to go from the regular downspout into the "rain barrel". It might not last as long as some, but it's cheap and it works! We've had it this way for 2 summers now -- we take it in in the winter. Send me an email (anitsirk at gmail) if you want me to take a picture for you.

I've seen some interesting ones at lee valley too, but they're a whole lot more expensive than our solution.

Arbour on Bank by Third makes rain barrels and sells them to other stores. I have been very happy with the two I have from there, one of which is many years old. I suggest a vehicle larger than my Honda Civic for transport, although the person working there was able to get it in.

They are a good store with good people, from my experience (no personal interest).
